At one point, Cohen's MS had made him lose his balance, and knock his son onto train tracks, in an accident that could have ended a lot worse than it did. Still, Vieira has always been understanding of Cohen's struggles, even in his denial.
After Meredith Vieira and her husband faced health battles earlier in their marriage, they really had to work hard at their relationship. In fact, during an interview in , Vieira explained that she had to have a stern talking to with Richard Cohen about his attitude while recovering from surgery. While Vieira understood that her husband was struggling mentally, she couldn't let them drift further and further apart. Indeed, Vieira had to confront Cohen for the sake of her family and their marriage.
