The award, now in its 18th year, is given with great appreciation to individuals whose vision and leadership have advanced the wine and food industry. It honors individuals whose vision and leadership have advanced the hospitality industry, and who have demonstrated a dynamic influence on the restaurant industry while changing the world through the power of food.
Proceeds of the event support The Collins College, one of the premier hospitality colleges in the world. Gina is a board member of the American Farmland Trust, which works to preserve agricultural land, and Taste of the NFL, which raises funds and awareness for food banks and anti-hunger initiatives.
Gina has also been honored with several awards and accolades. Jean-Charles Boisset was born into the world of wine in the village of Vougeot in Burgundy, France within view of centuries-old vineyards. As proprietor of Boisset Collection, Jean-Charles continues the entrepreneurial spirit of his parents who founded the company in His leadership at each property has garnered numerous awards for the quality of winemaking, historical preservation and innovative, educational guest experiences.
In what area I had no idea. I've talked to my brother about this and he didn't want anything to do with it. He thought he would go out and do something else, but obviously he found a place within the business that he loved. As palates have become more sophisticated, the business has had to shake off its cheap and cheerful image as a matter of survival. The premium market, says Gina, is where the growth in the market is coming from.
Then we were farming maybe 2, acres [ hectares] in Sonoma [one of the prime wine-growing areas in the US] and today we're at 10, acres, all high-end wines. We really have evolved. What I find really interesting is that my grandfather Julio started investing in Sonoma in She says the firm has varietals in the ground, single grape wines such as chardonnay or sauvignon, that could potentially come to market.
The family has also bought vineyards in Australia, elsewhere in the US and Europe, tending to keep the brand in place. We have purchased some brands that make sense but even with those, it is keeping the family involved if they want to be, and keeping the history and heritage there as well. There has to be something that grounds the brand. You can't just come up with Snoopy Dog or whatever - I guess you could, but we see those brands as not sustainable.
The company still produces Thunderbird, for many years its top seller and the cause of many a teenage hangover - in the US it is now commonly associated with down-and-outs. At the mention of sideways, it is too tempting not to segue into the film that gave merlot a bad name and championed the cause of pinot noir.
What's interesting now is that if you can buy a merlot at a certain price, you know you are going to get an extraordinary merlot and in America right now you have got to be a little bit careful on pinot, because there are some producers not focused on the long-term and you might get some bad ones.
