The polyphenols plant-based antioxidants and phytonutrient flavonoids in lychees ensure that you have a fighting fit heart. The nutrients inside lychees aid the production of blood. Lychee is rich in fibre and Vitamin B-complex, fat, protein, and carbohydrate that are essential for our metabolism. So if you have a cupful of lychees - say about ten litchis - any day, you have stocked up on vitamin C, vitamin B2 riboflavin , potassium and copper. As good as having a whole good orange - only in terms of Vitamin C content.
There is more. Lychees also have antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, liver-protective and immune-boosting benefits. Lychees also have blood-glucose-lowering abilities but also high on sugar content themselves. So before eating lychee or trying lychee extracts as a treatment for the condition of diabetes, one should consult the doctor.
But you may have often heard that there are some serious health issues concerned with the consumption of litchis of certain types and at certain times of the day. Listed below is how eating litchis at these hours can prove fatal and what type of litchis should you avoid.
In , in Bihar's Muzaffarpur - the land of litchi - fever and convulsions killed children. More than thrice as many were hospitalised in the spell between May and July in Muzaffarpur. Children would be brought to hospitals in the mornings with an immediate history of a high fever, seizures and convulsions followed by a coma-like state.
The green ones are unknown. But I think it's the emperor or Early Large Red lychees. I don't think they are shipped from China. I think they are from Florida The green ones are not that good compared to the red ones. Some are tart, sour, some sweet, and juicy. They're okay to eat since I don't have that many option. I think they will have more different variety later. We bought some too today from our local Asian market. Probably same kind. My wife gave them a 3 out of Most were okay but nowhere near the flavor of the Brewsters we had in Florida recently.
The ones with more pink are a bit sweeter. The big plus is that nearly every one so far has had chicken tongue seeds. Phase, unfortunately, they are only available for the first 10 days or so of June. I would guess that some mauritius will be sent to CA next year at the same time. If not you will be reduced to buying them online where they charge ridiculous prices. At last check, I did have 6 lychees growing on my mauritius tree that should ripen by the end of the summer, but needless to say there will only be 1 destination for any of those that make it to fruition.
LL, looks like I will have to wait until next year. I am sure your mauritius will taste even better than the store bought ones. I find myself eating more and more of these at one sitting not because I'm enjoying them A few are just fine The rest should not have been sent to market or even plucked from the tree. These would certainly turn off a first-time lychee eater. I'm convinced that the majority of people who tasted good mauritius lychees would absolutely fall in love with the fruit.
In my opinion, mauritius are an amazing tasting fruit, and taste better than brewster and hak ip, and obviously the as yet unamed tan olive turds that are currently being sold. I have not yet tasted emperor or sweetheart so cant comment on thier tatstes as compared to mauritius. Bottom line is, my advice is, if you want to taste lychees at their peak, buy some in Florida, or in china town between June 1 and June 10th. Here is a pic of mauritius and another variety that is probably hak ip or sweetheart.
The mauritius are the 2 bunches on the right of the picture. I preferred the mauritius. LL, the left ones do not seem like sweetheart. Here is a basket of sweetheart lychees ordered from lycheesonline. This is the best lychee I had compared to all the lychees I ate in the supermarkets.
It have a nice aroma and sweet taste. Some are real big More small and medium than real big ones. Hope my sweetheart tree will fruit next year. It's putting up a new growth flush right now. Yes, some were huge I was shock too. Never seen a lychee that big before. It was almost double the size of the golf ball. You can see how big some of them are in the picture. But of course they didn't send me all huge one. The flavor was so good.
I got a tree too, now sending out new growth. Hopefully I will get some fruit next year. I didn't get the tree from lycheesonline. I got it from Top Trop. I'll share picture later. Grafted lychees take three to five years to bear fruit, while seed-grown trees take 10 years or more. The 'Brewster' lychee Litchi chinensis 'Brewster', zones , according to Plant O Gram Nursery , the most popular variety in cultivation, can yield to lbs of fruit in a good year, although such yields occur in only one year out of every three, according to the University of Florida IFAS Extension.
Harvest lychee fruit by removing the entire branching cluster of fruit. Cut the branch where it connects to the tree and let the fruit cluster fall to the ground. The fruit can be left attached to the twigs or can be removed for storage. The fruit will stay fresh for up to three months if stored in a refrigerator where temperatures stay between 30 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit, although the University of California Cooperative Extension warns that the reddish hull turns brown after 10 days of storage.
Lychee trees grow best when planted in full sun with moist, acidic and moderately fertile soil, according to Missouri Botanical Garden. This species is easily damaged by wind so it should be positioned where strong prevailing winds are blocked. One consideration when choosing a planting site for lychees is the litter from their fruit, which can cause a slippery and dangerous mess if left to fall on the ground.
Grow these trees away from walkways and patios. Lychees produce the greatest fruit yield when the local climate provides the right conditions. These trees need dry, very cool conditions for three to five months in winter, a warm spring and a hot, humid summer for good fruit development, followed by a warm autumn for harvest.
